Service Highlights from our Capella Community

Enjoy this short highlight of alumni who shared how they volunteered in their communities this year.

Dr. Victoria Robinson | Doctor of Public Health

“In my free time, I volunteer with my local parish in Kansas City, MO, to provide information on chronic health conditions. We typically meet once a month, which offers a valuable opportunity to connect and discuss topics that may not arise otherwise. I join other Catholic women to address issues such as postpartum depression, hypertension and diabetes, etc., and we occasionally share healthy recipes. I enjoy educating others on ways to enhance their overall well-being, and I appreciate it when individuals ask questions to gain a deeper understanding of their health and wellness. In the future, I hope to develop community programs like the one I volunteer at.”

Giovanne Schachere | MS in Human Services

“As a proud Capella University graduate, I continue to lead with purpose and community-centered impact. This past November, I led my team at the Mystis Education Program in partnership with The Salvation Army (Santa Clarita Valley Corps) to support families in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday.

I helped ensure local families had access to essential resources by preparing and organizing food bags for Thanksgiving distribution, sorting food and toiletry donations, and stocking pantry items. It was a wonderful experience and an opportunity to give back and connect with our communities.”

Dr. Paulette O’Gilvie | PhD in Human Services

“Earlier this year, I served as a keynote speaker at the inaugural I AM A BETTER ME! Mental Health Conference in Bronx, NY—an opportunity that allowed me to help shape the event’s focus on self-care and healing, the intersection of mental health and the criminal justice system, and spiritual distress and trauma. I was drawn to this organization because its mission aligns closely with the human services principles I developed at Capella University, as well as my own professional philosophy.”

Damere Holloway | MS in Applied Behavior Analysis

“I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer at the MSK Community Center in Wilmington, DE, where I read my children’s book, Omar the Owl, to autistic grade-school students. During the session, I emphasized the importance of understanding autism, drawing from my experiences as a college student learning, growing, and graduating from Capella University. It was fulfilling to educate and engage with the students, helping them gain insights into autism and its significance.”

Past Initiatives That Highlight Alumni Impact

In August 2025, Capella University students, alumni and staff volunteered at United Against Poverty Orlando. Volunteers cleaned, organized and stocked shelves, and assisted in other areas to help provide members with a dignified shopping experience at the Member Share Grocery and Marketplace.

In June 2025, Capella alumni gathered in the full-service kitchen at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicago to volunteer for the Cookies from the Heart event. Together, they baked homemade treats to offer comfort and care to families staying at the house while their children received medical treatment nearby. The kitchen buzzed with teamwork, warmth, and the smell of fresh cookies as alumni created small moments of joy for families navigating challenging times. This act of service reflected the compassion and community spirit that Capella alumni proudly carry forward.

In May 2025, Capella students and alumni gathered in St. Charles, Illinois for a meaningful volunteer event that blended compassion with community impact. Participants submitted 60+ handwritten letters to Love for Our Elders, a nonprofit organization that spreads kindness to older adults through heartfelt messages. Additionally, dozens of household essentials were collected and donated through a wish list drive benefiting the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicago, providing support to families facing medical challenges.

The event received strong support from Capella faculty and staff, reflecting the university’s shared commitment to service and well-being. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, Dr. Kristi Mueller spoke about the importance of connectedness from a mental health perspective. Dr. Jesse Burgard followed with a discussion on how those same concepts apply during mental health crises, focusing on suicide prevention and how these tools can benefit everyone. This day of giving back highlighted the power of community, compassion, and collective impact.

Past Events That Amplify Alumni Voices

The April 2025 Alumni Speaker Series, titled Building Your Professional Brand on LinkedIn, was hosted via Zoom and brought together accomplished alumni to share actionable strategies for enhancing LinkedIn presence, showcasing expertise, and advancing careers through impactful personal branding and networking. Alumni speakers Dr. Tina Flores, Dr. Felix Hernandez, and Reena Washington offered valuable insights on optimizing profiles, building authentic connections, and using the platform to highlight professional strengths. The Capella community deeply appreciated the engaging and practical guidance, leaving attendees inspired to elevate their online presence and take meaningful steps toward career growth.
