Alumni Spotlight: Dennis and Virgie Roy — A Shared Calling in Nursing

Dennis and Virgie Roy’s journey through graduate nursing education is one of purpose, partnership and perseverance. With Dennis recently earning his Doctor of Nursing Practice and Virgie completing her Master of Science in Nursing while currently pursuing her DNP, the couple continues to honor a personal legacy while making a meaningful impact in the healthcare field. Their story reflects the power of shared goals, deep faith and lifelong learning.

What inspired each of you to pursue advanced nursing degrees, and how has your education influenced your work or perspective in the field?
Our pursuit of advanced nursing education is rooted in honoring the legacy of our daughter, Patricia, a United States Air Force service member who dreamed of becoming a nurse before she passed away while on active duty. In keeping with our promise to honor her unfinished dream, nursing became a calling shaped by service, excellence, and faith. Through Capella, our education transformed grief into purpose and deepened our understanding of leadership, evidence-based practice, and compassionate care.

Dennis recently completed his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA—further exemplifying the academic excellence that led to his induction into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing during his MSN studies. This achievement reflects perseverance, resilience, and quiet sacrifices unseen by others yet honored by God. Virgie also reached a meaningful milestone last March, completing her Master’s Degree in Nursing with a perfect GPA. She celebrated her graduation ceremony in Arlington, Texas, alongside her faculty and classmates, dedicating this accomplishment to Patricia’s memory. To honor her, Virgie wore her graduation gown and U.S. Air Force stole while standing proudly with the leadership and staff of the 60th Aerial Port Squadron—symbolizing the continuation of Patricia’s legacy of service and excellence.

How has sharing the same profession shaped your growth—either personally, professionally, or both?
Sharing the nursing profession has strengthened our partnership in every dimension. We understand the emotional, physical, and intellectual demands of healthcare, which allows us to support one another with empathy and grace. Professionally, it has fostered collaboration and shared reflection; personally, it has deepened our bond and reinforced a shared mission rooted in service, faith, and compassion.

What is one challenge you’ve faced in your nursing journey, and how did your education or experience help you navigate it?
One of the greatest challenges was starting over—academically, financially, and emotionally—after leaving stability and familiarity. Nursing education required humility, resilience, and trust. Capella’s structured yet flexible programs provided the support needed to balance rigorous academics with work and family life, transforming uncertainty into growth and confidence.

What advice would you offer to nurses considering graduate education while balancing work and family life?
Remain anchored in purpose. Graduate education is demanding, but clarity of “why” sustains perseverance. Choose a program that values flexibility, integrity, and real-world applicability. Communicate openly with family, ask for support, and extend grace to yourself. Growth often comes with sacrifice—but it is deeply worthwhile.

How do you each hope to make an impact in the field of nursing, and what’s next on your professional horizon?
We hope to continue improving patient outcomes through compassionate care, leadership, education, and responsible use of technology. Both of us currently serve within a mission-driven community at David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center, where teamwork, resilience, and service are lived daily in support of active-duty members, veterans, and their families. Giving back through scholarship and global engagement remains central to our calling. In October, Virgie had the privilege of sharing her scientific insights on chronic disease management of diabetes at an international conference in Orlando, Florida, alongside global thought leaders from across continents. This experience reflected our shared belief that God heals through science, and we remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to advancing patient care worldwide.

Virgie is currently in the final stage of her Doctor of Nursing Practice program, and we are prayerfully looking forward to walking together at Capella University’s graduation ceremony on June 27—a date that also marks our 32nd wedding anniversary. This shared academic milestone will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a full-circle setting in the very place where our family’s journey in the United States began. Looking ahead, continued service, advanced practice, leadership, and mentorship remain central to our professional paths.

Above all, we give glory to God—the Author of this journey. His grace carried us, His strength sustained us, and His faithfulness made every step possible. In every patient cared for, every life touched, and every step taken with purpose and courage, may His name be glorified.
