Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Ruby Parkzes on Leading with Purpose in Primary Care

After earning both her MSN-AGNP and Doctor of Nursing Practice from Capella University, Dr. Ruby Parkzes launched and continues to lead a thriving nurse practitioner-led primary care practice. Her story highlights the intersection of clinical excellence, business ownership and mentorship, showing how nurses can drive meaningful change in their communities and across the healthcare system.

Dr. Ruby Parkzes: “As a proud Capella University graduate, I am honored to share my journey of growth, resilience, and purpose. After earning my MSN–AGNP Primary Care degree in 2020, I passed my boards within one month, secured my first nurse practitioner role within 60 days, and courageously opened my own primary care private practice just 90 days after graduation. As my practice grew, so did my desire to elevate my leadership, clinical expertise, and impact on the healthcare system. That inspiration led me to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at Capella University. Completing my DNP at Capella in 2023 was a pivotal milestone that strengthened my voice as a clinician, an owner, and an advocate. The rigorous, flexible, and supportive structure of Capella’s program allowed me to continue running my woman-owned, nurse-practitioner-led practice—now approaching its 5th anniversary—while advancing my education at the highest level. Since earning my DNP, I have expanded my influence by precepting NP students, mentoring emerging clinicians, and using my doctorate-level training to improve care delivery and health outcomes in my community.

My story is one of faith, determination, and the belief that nurses can lead and innovate at every level. Capella played a defining role in helping me achieve my professional goals and continue making meaningful, lasting change in primary care. One of my greatest accomplishments has been establishing and successfully operating a woman-owned, nurse-practitioner-led primary care private practice within just 90 days of completing my MSN and passing my board certification. Since opening, my practice has continued to grow and is now approaching its 5-year milestone, serving patients with compassion, accessibility, and evidence-based care. Earning my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Capella University in 2023 stands as another significant achievement. Completing my doctorate while running a full-time primary care practice required discipline, resilience, and a deep commitment to advancing healthcare leadership. My DNP elevated my ability to improve clinical outcomes, implement quality initiatives, and lead with greater authority and confidence. I am also proud of my role as a preceptor for nurse practitioner students, where I actively contribute to shaping the next generation of advanced practice nurses. Mentoring future clinicians and supporting their professional growth has been both an honor and a meaningful extension of my mission to strengthen nursing leadership and expand access to high-quality primary care.”
