Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Jenae’ Proctor on Building a Meaningful Career in Counselor Education

For Dr. Jenae’ Proctor, returning to school was about more than earning a degree. As a working professional with a full schedule, she needed flexibility and structure to stay focused. Capella provided both. From making national peer connections to learning from faculty with diverse expertise, her experience helped shape a broader view of counselor education. Now she is preparing for a new chapter focused on teaching, consulting and giving back to the field she loves.

How did your Capella experience shape your perspective on the field of Counselor Education?

Dr. Jenae’ Proctor: Well, for me, Capella was a game-changer because I came in as a working professional who really needed that flexibility. I couldn’t sit in a traditional classroom, and Capella’s online platform let me plan out my entire semester on day one. That structure and flexibility helped me stay organized and on top of my work, which was huge for balancing everything in my life. What also shaped my perspective was connecting with colleagues all over the country, and really even feeling like I had this broader network that I wouldn’t have had in a local traditional university. The faculty were also from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, so it really broadened my understanding of counselor education as this big, interconnected field.

What advice would you give to learners who are just beginning their PhD journey?

Dr. Jenae’ Proctor: I’d say, embrace that flexibility if you have it and really use tools that help you stay organized, because life will keep happening. Whether you’re juggling jobs, family, or other responsibilities, it’s about pacing yourself and being patient. And don’t hesitate to lean on your support network, especially your professors and your peers, because you’ll be surprised how many people are willing to help you succeed.

Now that you have graduated, what is the next goal you are excited to pursue?

Dr. Jenae’ Proctor: Now that I’ve graduated, honestly, my next goal is to just enjoy the moments I have with my family and really savor this time now that I finally have the flexibility to shift my focus a bit. But after that, I’m really excited to start developing my own company around providing consultation, training, and supervision services. I also eventually want to step into an adjunct professor role. Teaching is something I’ve really grown passionate about thanks to my experience at Capella, and I’m already starting to apply for those roles. So it’s a mix of taking a breath and then jumping into these new, exciting professional adventures.
