Alumni Spotlight: Lorinda Mohwinkel, MBA, Capella Alum and Senior Career Coach on Supporting Career Growth

Capella alum Lorinda Mohwinkel, MBA, serves as a Senior Career Coach in Capella’s Career Development Center, where she supports learners and alumni through career transitions, goal setting and professional growth. Her own journey through graduate school and the workforce gives her a grounded perspective that shapes the way she coaches and encourages others. In this Q&A, Lorinda reflects on the experiences that influenced her approach and the insights she hopes will continue to support the Capella’s valued community.

Q: Tell us about your degree from Capella and how you feel that accomplishment has impacted your career.

Lorinda Mohwinkel, MBA: I earned my MBA from Capella in 2021, but I began the degree at another university in 2015. It took me 6 years to complete the coursework, which included a school transfer midway through. Studying for my MBA taught me to think critically and approach problems with innovative solutions.

I came to understand my own learning and working habits better, and had to show grit when the going got tough (which it did, while balancing the priorities of a working adult student). All of these transferable skills are directly applicable in my current career, enabling me to apply the same critical thinking and problem-solving skills to meet the evolving demands of AI technology usage. I structure my schedule around the times I know I get my best work done, and my determination shines through in the face of changes or difficulties. I continue to have the confidence to tackle these hurdles, supported by the experience of my MBA.

Q2: What inspired you to pursue a path in Career Services?

Lorinda Mohwinkel, MBA: I had a very meaningful interaction with the Career Center at my undergraduate institution. I felt listened to and partnered with to brainstorm next steps for my career and development, and I knew I wanted to serve other students in the same way. From there, I pursued informational interviews with professionals in the field, and many of them are now my colleagues. I asked questions about their journeys and how they navigated their career path, and I mirrored what I could to serve my own interests and experience. I have worked in higher education for over 11 years, the last 8 years with Capella, and have never looked back.

Q3: What is one thing you wish Capella alumni knew about the Capella Career Development Center?

Lorinda Mohwinkel, MBA: I’m admittedly biased because I work on the team, but the Career Development Center truly offers incredible resources for students and alumni. What I wish more graduates knew is that we continue to be a long-term support system throughout your program and career. We have countless self-serve tools, tips and best practices on everything from networking and resumes to job search and interview prep. Students and alumni can also access real-time support using AI tools or connect with one of dedicated career coaches to brainstorm a variety of career development topics.

We also host live events, like webinars and panel discussions, and encourage alumni to join sessions that fit their interests. Explore upcoming events and resources here: Learn more
