A two-time Capella University graduate, Brandon earned both his BSN and MSN while working full time and raising a family. His story is a powerful example of what’s possible when dedication meets opportunity. We caught up with Brandon to learn more about his path through Capella, how his education has shaped his work, and what’s next in his mission to serve rural communities through nursing leadership and education.

Q1: Share your story! If you have an inspiring story about earning your degree and accomplishing your goals, please share it with us.
Brandon Compton, MSN: Growing up in the rural hills of Wyoming County, West Virginia, I witnessed firsthand the challenges of limited healthcare access and the vital role nurses play in underserved communities. This early exposure fueled my passion for nursing and a lifelong commitment to improving patient care.
While balancing full-time work and family responsibilities, I pursued both my BSN and MSN through Capella University. Capella’s flexible, rigorous curriculum gave me the opportunity to thrive academically while continuing to serve my community.
The self-paced structure empowered me to manage my time effectively and apply my learning in real-time, directly impacting the patients and staff I worked with daily. Earning my MSN from Capella was more than a degree, it was a transformative experience that sharpened my leadership skills, deepened my understanding of evidence-based practice, and prepared me for greater roles in healthcare administration and education. Today, I serve as a Nurse Educator and am planning on pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice to drive systemic change and advocate for nurses and patients in rural health settings.
Capella gave me the tools, support, and confidence to break through barriers and redefine what’s possible. My story is one of perseverance, purpose, and the belief that with the right support, no dream is out of reach.
Q2: What is one of your personal accomplishments in your field?
Brandon Compton, MSN: One of my most significant professional accomplishments has been serving as the Assistant Director of Nursing for eight years, where I led a team of over 80 nursing professionals including RNs, LPNs, and CNAs in a fast-paced acute care setting. In this role, I developed and implemented staffing strategies that improved nurse retention and reduced burnout, particularly in high stress departments like the emergency room and ICU. Currently, as a Nurse Educator at WVU Medicine Princeton Community Hospital, I’ve had the privilege of developing and launching evidence-based education programs that support professional growth, competency, and clinical excellence. I’ve also played a key role in integrating simulation-based learning and continuing education to strengthen critical thinking and patient safety outcomes.
Earning my MSN from Capella was a cornerstone in achieving these milestones. It empowered me to apply advanced leadership and quality improvement skills that directly enhanced organizational performance and patient care. I am now pursuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice to expand this impact on a larger, systems level.
