LaMonica Johnson turns real-world experience into strategic HR leadership
LaMonica Johnson, MS, has always understood the power of professional evolution. With more than 25 years of experience in portfolio management, compliance, and workforce development, her path to human resources leadership was built on persistence, skill, and a clear sense of purpose. “I realized that my passion for employee engagement, talent development, and strategic HR planning was guiding my career,” said Johnson. Even before holding an official HR title, she embraced responsibilities like recruiting, onboarding, payroll administration, corporate relocation, and training, leaning fully into what she knew she was called to do.
Capella’s flexible program helped shape a bold new direction
Earning a master’s in human resources management from Capella University gave Johnson the tools to align her real-world experience with industry-recognized strategies. “Earning my master’s from Capella has been a transformative experience, allowing me to strengthen my leadership skills and deepen my expertise in HR strategy.” Her academic experience sharpened skills in workforce analytics, employee relations, compliance, and talent development. “The coursework, combined with real-world case studies and SHRM-aligned competencies, reinforced my ability to drive HR innovation, compliance, and workforce engagement strategies in my industry.”
That expertise was further strengthened through hands-on roles, including her time as a Vendor Recruiter at Renters Warehouse, where she led full-cycle recruitment, workforce planning, and Salesforce training. She also supported corporate relocation and onboarding for international hires.“Capella’s flexible, competency-based program gave me the tools to integrate HR strategy with business goals,” Johnson added. “I am incredibly proud of this accomplishment, as it represents not just a degree but a strategic career transformation.”
This journey is a powerful reminder to keep reaching higher
“Balancing work, education, and personal responsibilities was challenging, but through determination, discipline, and the support of Capella’s faculty, I persevered.” Now preparing for SHRM-CP certification, Johnson feels ready to make an even greater impact. “Today, as I prepare for my SHRM-CP certification, I feel more confident than ever in my ability to lead HR initiatives, drive business success, and make a lasting impact in the field of human resources.”
Her message to fellow professionals and alumni is one of hope and determination: “This journey has been about more than just earning a degree—it’s been about embracing growth, seizing opportunities, and unlocking my full potential. I am proud to be a Capella graduate and excited for what lies ahead!”
