The Value of Giving Back: Why Service Matters More Than Ever

Giving back isn’t just a good deed—it’s a powerful act that strengthens communities, creates connection, and reminds us of our shared humanity. Whether you offer your time, talents, or a simple word of encouragement, your contribution can have a lasting impact.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, we reflect on the deeper meaning of service and the many ways Capella alumni can stay engaged in causes that matter—locally, nationally, and globally.

Why Giving Back Matters

Giving back is one of the most fulfilling ways to create change in the world. Research shows that people who volunteer regularly report increased happiness, lower stress levels, and a stronger sense of purpose. But beyond personal benefits, giving back builds social trust, strengthens community ties, and fills critical gaps in support for underserved populations.

At Capella, we are proud to support a community of alumni and learners who lead with intention, compassion, and a desire to make a difference. When we serve others, we live out our values—and inspire others to do the same.

Ways to Give Back

Whether you have five minutes or five hours, there’s always a way to contribute. Here are a few ideas for how you can give back—no matter where you are or how busy life gets:

1. Volunteer Your Time
Find a local organization that aligns with your interests—whether it’s mentoring students, serving at a food bank, walking dogs at a shelter, or cleaning up public parks. Even one hour a month can make a difference.

2. Use Your Skills
Offer your professional skills to a nonprofit in need. Many organizations are looking for help with writing, design, accounting, marketing, or technology support.

3. Donate Thoughtfully
Contributing items like toiletries, school supplies, winter coats, or gift cards can go a long way. If you’re short on time, check out Amazon Wish Lists from nonprofits that allow you to send needed items directly to their doors.

4. Write to Someone Who Needs Encouragement
A kind word can change someone’s day. Organizations like Love for Our Elders and Letters of Hope allow you to send handwritten messages to isolated seniors, hospital patients, and youth in foster care.

5. Support Youth and Education
Volunteer as a tutor or mentor, participate in college readiness programs, or speak to students about your career journey. Your story could inspire someone to chase their goals.

6. Get Involved with Capella
From participating in alumni events to mentoring current learners, there are many ways to give back to the Capella community. Reach out to the alumni team to explore volunteer opportunities that match your interests.

A Call to Action

Giving back doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful. Whether it’s sharing your time, lending your voice, or offering support, every act of service helps build a better world. As a Capella alum, your leadership, experience, and heart for service are part of what makes our community thrive.

This National Volunteer Week, consider how you can use what you have to uplift someone else. Start small. Start local. Just start.
